Time is More Precious than Gold

by Celine Teh

Value time and you will reap its rewards

Squander it and you will add sorrow to your years

When I was 9 years old, my Malay Language teacher wrote these words, “Masa itu emas” in my autograph book which in English literally means “Time is gold”. Looking back on hindsight, I guess that she wanted me to value and treasure time. Unfortunately, I neither understood nor appreciated its significance.

Today, I view time from another lens. I have since found out that Time is more precious than gold. Time is irreplaceable, irrecoverable and invaluable. It cannot be stored or hoarded. It has no value unless invested. It has a life force of its own and it marches on whether you like it or not because “Time and tide waits for no man.”

So let us not ignore it, because our ignorance is tantamount to squandering it. Here are some suggestions to value time.

Make time for personal development and growth

  • learn a new skill
  • read a book
  • learn a new language

Spend time with the people you love

  • Relationships need to be nurtured in order to bear fruit
  • Be patient with the young and old alike

Invest in your health and well being

  • Get proper rest
  • Maintain a practical exercise regime
  • Forgive anyone who hurt you

Try them out and experience their positive effects over your life.
